What does it take to become an architect?
To get a license and the privilege to use the title architect, Michigan architects
will have completed five or six years university course of study, a three years internship
of diversified practical training then follows a candidate's education under the direct
supervisory control of a practicing licensed architect. It is only then that they are
eligible to take the Architectural Registration Exam. The letters "AIA" after the name
means that this architect subscribes to a Code of Ethics. It is an architect that works
to earn Continuing Education Credits to be up-to-date on the latest building technology.
What can I expect to spend on Architects
fees?
The architect's fee is, to a large extent, based on the service
provided. This can range from a few hours consultation to complete, detailed construction
drawings, specifications, and visit to the site during construction. The more that the
architect does, the higher the cost will be. An architect can charge an hourly fee, a flat
fee for the project, a certain amount per square foot, a percentage of the construction
costs, or some combination of those elements. Fees can range from 5% to 15% of the total
construction cost.
Why hire an architect?
An architect can
blend your needs, your budget, the restrictions of a site, and the requirements of building
codes into a design that is personalized for you. Using an architect does not necessarily
increase the total cost of a project. Often an architect can suggest some money-saving
alternatives that you might not have considered.
What do I do before I make an appointment?
Think through your families wants and needs - Make a wish list of things you would like
to include.
Have a project budget.
The site - If you already have a lot or property,
bring a plot plan or a topographical plan. If you are planning a remodeling or addition you
may want the architect to come to your home.
Make a folder of magazine clippings, photos
of houses/rooms that you like will give the architect a better idea of your tastes.
